Almost every driver has pulled up at a petrol station only to realise at the last moment that the fuel filler door is on the other side of the car. It is located on the left on some vehicles and on the right on others. On certain older models, the filler opening could even be found at the rear of the car. Why have manufacturers never agreed on a single standard position?

There Is No Universal International Standard

The main reason is simple: there is no universal international rule specifying which side of a car the fuel filler door must be on. Manufacturers choose its position according to the design of each model, safety requirements and production considerations.

As a result, even different models made by the same manufacturer may have fuel filler doors on opposite sides. The position does not necessarily depend on whether the car was designed for a country with left-hand or right-hand traffic.

The Vehicle’s Design Plays an Important Role

Many components must fit into the limited space beneath a car. These include the fuel tank, exhaust system, suspension components, brake lines, electrical wiring and other technical parts.

Engineers choose the position of the filler opening according to where the fuel tank and its connecting pipe can be installed most safely and efficiently. The filler pipe is often positioned away from the exhaust system to reduce exposure to heat and make the overall design as safe as possible.

Should It Be on the Driver’s Side or the Passenger’s Side?

One common theory is that some manufacturers place the fuel filler door on the passenger’s side so that the driver stands farther away from passing traffic while refuelling. On the other hand, a filler door on the driver’s side can be more convenient because the driver can judge the distance between the vehicle and the pump more easily when pulling in.

Both solutions have their advantages, but manufacturers do not follow one consistent principle. The final position is usually determined by the vehicle’s construction, platform and production requirements.

Different Positions Help Distribute Queues at Petrol Stations

If every car had its fuel filler door on the same side, most drivers would try to use the same pumps. Because filler doors can be found on either side, vehicles can approach the pumps from different directions, helping to distribute queues more evenly.

This is a useful consequence for petrol stations, although it is not usually the main reason why a manufacturer chooses the left or right side.

How Can You Tell Which Side It Is On?

You do not need to leave the car to check. Look at the fuel pump symbol on the instrument panel. On most modern vehicles, there is a small triangle or arrow next to it:

  • if the arrow points left, the fuel filler door is on the left side of the car;
  • if the arrow points right, the fuel filler door is on the right side of the car.

This small indicator is particularly useful when driving a rental car, a replacement vehicle or a car you have recently purchased. Some older vehicles do not have an arrow, so it may be necessary to check the filler door’s position before arriving at the pump.

Does Its Position Affect the Quality of the Car?

No. A fuel filler door located on the left or right does not make a car better, safer or more economical. It is primarily a design decision, and most drivers remember the correct side after refuelling the vehicle a few times.

There is therefore no secret rule behind the position of the fuel filler door. It is mainly determined by the vehicle’s construction, component layout, safety considerations and the manufacturer’s technical decisions. The most useful tip is to check the small arrow beside the fuel pump symbol. You will then know which side of the pump to use before you pull in.
